Ingredient Spotlight: Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate

Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is also known as stabilized vitamin C. Vitamin C has been a popular ingredient in skincare for decades now, but only recently have large strides been made in making it available to your skin in a way your body needs. Most topical vitamin C is just that—it sits on the outermost surface of your skin and provides a thin antioxidant barrier that is easily washed away. Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is capable of going deeper and doing more, with none of the risk of irritation that other vitamin C derivatives can cause.

The development of this component came when it was shown that many forms of vitamin C tended to redden and bother the surface of the skin, and that their capacity for penetration was minimal compared to the side effects experienced. Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is oil-soluble, which means that its capacity to interact with the various layers within your skin is greater than its predecessors, which stop at the stratum corneum and only serve as an antioxidant barrier, nothing more. Because of this, it is able to interact with the dermis, the lower layer within your skin that is responsible for cell production. Vitamin C stimulates your dermis to make collagen—an essential component of age-defying bodycare, because your body stops making collagen as you age, which causes your skin to lose elasticity.

Our company prides itself on delivering a product for you that refuses a number of toxic ingredients. We have enumerated our reasons for doing so in various other blogs, but the reason this decision is such a tightrope to walk is that many of those toxic ingredients keep the products they are in shelf-stable for years. One of the additional benefits of tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is that it is incredibly stable and can be stored for up to a year and a half without incident. For those of you that go through product, this might not matter much, but its stability rating also means that it isn’t going to lose effectiveness after you remove it from the bottle, expose it to air, put it on your skin, and trust it to protect you all day.

Spring is coming. Why not ready yourself for the wild, windy newness of it all with a bottle of our serum? Check out our previous blog posts for more ingredient information and reasons why our product stands out above the rest.
